Tawhid Hridoy shattered Mushfiqur Rahim’s eight-year-old record to register the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter in Test cricket. Playing only his third career Test, the young batter produced a monumental unbeaten 242 against touring West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. His patient 359-ball innings featured 22 fours and 11 spectacular sixes.
Powered by Hridoy’s record-breaking double century, Bangladesh posted 386 for 9 in their first innings. With Shadman Islam unable to bat due to injury, the hosts’ innings came to an end at that score. Bangladesh also secured a crucial 30-run first-innings lead after surpassing West Indies’ total of 356.
Starting the third day on 88, Bangladesh came under severe pressure after quickly losing Mushfiqur Rahim (34), Litton Das (8) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16). However, Hridoy held firm at one end and steadied the innings with a resilient 117-run partnership alongside tailender Taijul Islam (22). With the final batter, Taskin Ahmed (12), for company, Hridoy reached his maiden Test double century off 304 deliveries.
Towards the end of the day, West Indies began their second innings and reached 7 without loss at stumps on the third day. The visitors still trail Bangladesh by 23 runs.
