Committee Formed to Investigate Bangladeshs Exclusion from T20 World Cup

The Bangladesh government has formed a committee to investigate the controversy surrounding the decision not to send the national team to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup. That decision by the previous government ultimately led to Bangladesh being excluded from the tournament held in February and March.

In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry of Sports announced that a three-member committee has been formed, headed by additional secretary Dr AKM Wali Ullah. Former Bangladesh captain and chief selector Habibul Bashar and Faisal Dastagir have also been included in the committee. They have been tasked with reviewing the entire matter related to Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup and are expected to submit their report within 15 working days.

The chain of events began on January 3, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to remove Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. However, no specific reason behind the decision was disclosed. At the time, political relations between Bangladesh and India were also strained.

The following day, then sports adviser Asif Nazrul stated through his verified Facebook account that he wanted the ICC to shift Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka. He was serving as an adviser in the interim government formed in August 2024 after the Awami League government was toppled through a student-led uprising.

In his January 4 post, Asif Nazrul wrote, “I have asked the BCB to explain the entire matter to the ICC. If a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India, then the entire Bangladesh team cannot feel safe going there to participate in the World Cup. I have also requested the Board to demand that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka.”

Following that, the Bangladesh Cricket Board informed the ICC that Bangladesh would not travel to India to participate in the tournament. However, the ICC responded by saying that it had found no credible security concerns. An ICC delegation later visited Bangladesh to discuss the matter, but the deadlock remained unresolved.

On January 24, after the ICC board rejected Bangladesh’s request to play in Sri Lanka, the team was removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland.

On the eve of the national election, Asif Nazrul changed his stance and said that he had not made any decision to withdraw Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup. Instead, he shifted the responsibility onto the players.

After the new government took office, sports adviser Aminul Haque said they wanted to rebuild Bangladesh’s sporting relationship with India. He also told parliament that a proper investigation was needed into the roles played by the BCB and the previous government in handling the T20 World Cup issue.
