Litton Das and Sheikh Mehedi fined for breaching code of conduct, Mehedi receives heavier penalty

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) disciplinary committee has decided to impose financial penalties on national cricketers Litton Das and Sheikh Mehedi for breaching the board’s code of conduct. Following separate hearings, the committee recommended fines for both players, with Sheikh Mehedi receiving a larger penalty than Litton.

According to board sources, Litton was charged with travelling abroad without informing the BCB. Sheikh Mehedi, meanwhile, was accused of violating the code of conduct by publicly expressing his dissatisfaction with the team management through the media.

After returning from the Zimbabwe tour, Sheikh Mehedi appeared before the BCB disciplinary committee on Tuesday (July 22) evening to explain his position. Litton Das, on the other hand, submitted his explanation both verbally and in writing before leaving for Singapore for medical treatment.

BCB director and disciplinary committee member Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir confirmed the matter to several media outlets. However, he declined to disclose the exact amount of the fines.

Speaking to a media outlet, Sirajuddin said, “It would be better not to disclose their (Litton and Mehedi’s) punishment at this stage, as it is entirely an internal matter. A financial fine has been proposed for Litton. The same applies to Sheikh Mehedi. However, Sheikh Mehedi’s fine is higher than Litton’s.”

It has been learned that Litton returned home midway through the Zimbabwe tour due to injury. He later travelled to China without obtaining prior approval from the BCB. Under the board’s code of conduct, national cricketers must seek permission from the BCB before travelling abroad, even when they are not involved in an ongoing series or official assignment. His failure to follow that procedure led to the disciplinary charge.

Sheikh Mehedi, meanwhile, publicly criticised the team management after being left out of the playing XI during the recent T20I series against Australia. He also expressed his disappointment over not being selected. According to the BCB, those public remarks were inconsistent with the team’s code of conduct, resulting in disciplinary action against the off-spinning all-rounder.
