Reality of Pakistan Cricket in Khawajas Comments, Fine or a New Burden of Pressure
Following a disappointing performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board has fined each player of the national team 5 million Pakistani rupees. The news came after their defeat to arch-rivals India in the group stage. Reports say that if the team had reached the semifinals, there was a possibility the fine would have been waived.
Australian batter of Pakistani origin Usman Khawaja expressed surprise after hearing the news in a video message shared on social media. He said, “At first, I couldn’t believe that players were fined for losing a match. It’s really surprising and harmful as it increases mental pressure.”
According to Khawaja, no one comes to international cricket intending to lose a match. Therefore, imposing fines for defeats only creates additional pressure on the players. He said, “Pakistani players are already under immense pressure from the expectations of fans back home. In the past, team selection controversies and leadership changes have also added to that pressure. Now, with this fine, the situation may become even more complicated.”
He also commented that Pakistan cricket has long been surrounded by controversies and administrative instability. In his words, “Pakistan cricket is like an ongoing drama that keeps surprising people again and again.”
