Shakibs Off Day Ends in MI New York Defeat
MI New York suffered a five-wicket defeat to the San Francisco Unicorns in the Major League Cricket (MLC). Played in Pomona, the match saw star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan endure a disappointing outing with both bat and ball, which proved to be one of the key factors behind his team’s defeat.
After winning the toss, the San Francisco Unicorns elected to field first. Batting first, MI New York’s star-studded batting lineup came under heavy pressure from the Unicorns’ bowlers. Opener Quinton de Kock was dismissed for a duck.
With the team in trouble, Bangladesh’s poster boy Shakib Al Hasan failed to stabilize the innings. Batting at No. 5, he managed just one run from three deliveries before being caught by Brody Couch off the bowling of Matt Short.
Following Shakib’s early dismissal, MI New York continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Nicholas Pooran scored 20, while Corbin Bosch contributed 21 as the team was bowled out for just 104 runs in 20 overs. For the Unicorns, all-rounder Matt Short starred with the ball, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs.
Chasing a modest target of 105, the San Francisco Unicorns lost an early wicket in the first over but recovered through a composed innings from Sanjay Krishnamurthi. He remained unbeaten on 48 off 45 balls to guide his side toward victory.
In an attempt to bring MI New York back into the contest, captain Kieron Pollard introduced Shakib Al Hasan into the attack. However, the veteran spinner failed to make an impact with the ball as well. He went wicketless in his full quota of four overs, conceding 25 runs at an economy rate of 6.25.
The San Francisco Unicorns eventually reached the target in 16.5 overs, losing five wickets in the process.
Matt Short was named Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance, taking four wickets and scoring 21 runs. The defeat dealt a setback to MI New York’s position in the tournament standings.
