Stokes and Atkinson Return After Nightclub Controversy as England Fight to Save the Series

England have made four significant changes to their playing XI for the third and final Test of the ongoing series against New Zealand. Regular captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson return to the side for the must-win encounter, which begins on Thursday at Trent Bridge. It will be their first appearance since the controversy surrounding an incident at a Chelsea nightclub nearly two weeks ago.

Following a crushing 253-run defeat in the second Test at The Oval, England have also recalled spinner Shoaib Bashir and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith. Bashir, who was left out of the Oval Test, returns as the frontline spinner, with the decision influenced by the ongoing heatwave across the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Smith replaces James Rew after missing the Oval Test due to the birth of his second child. Rew, who endured a disappointing debut, has been dropped from the 15-man squad altogether.

However, Ollie Robinson, who was named Player of the Match in the first Test at Lord’s, has not been included in the XI. Despite being declared fully fit after recovering from a knee injury, the team management has opted to leave him out.

England have come under increasing pressure in recent months due to both their on-field performances and off-field distractions. Since the Test against India at The Oval in 2025, the team have lost six of their last seven Tests. The situation has been further complicated by reports of tension between head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes following the nightclub incident, as well as speculation surrounding Stokes’ future in cricket.

England XI for the third Test:

Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir.
