Ticket Sales for India-Pakistan Match Put on Hold
One of the most anticipated fixtures of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the India–Pakistan clash, has been clouded by uncertainty even before the tournament begins. Due to the lack of clarity over Pakistan’s participation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has temporarily suspended ticket sales for the match.
The India–Pakistan group match is scheduled to take place on February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. While tickets for other matches in the tournament are already available on the official ICC website, the India–Pakistan fixture has not yet been listed on the ticketing portal.
The primary reason behind the ICC’s decision is the absence of any official stance from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Although some reports and social media posts linked to the Pakistani government have hinted at a possible boycott, the PCB has not formally or officially communicated any decision to the ICC. As a result, with uncertainty over whether the match will take place, the ICC is unwilling to take the risk of selling tickets.
The situation has largely been complicated by ongoing geopolitical tensions and the Bangladesh issue. After raising security concerns about playing matches in India, Bangladesh was eventually excluded from the World Cup and replaced by Scotland. This development has also raised questions about Pakistan’s position, further adding to the uncertainty.
At the same time, the PCB has not issued any official boycott notice. Doing so could create major financial and logistical complications, particularly if tickets are sold in advance and the match is later cancelled. To avoid potential financial losses and disappointment among fans, the ICC is waiting for a final decision.
Behind the scenes, discussions are ongoing. ICC officials are in regular contact with PCB representatives in an effort to ensure that the match can be held as scheduled. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket, along with several other boards, has publicly urged Pakistan to reconsider its stance, noting that cancelling the match would result in significant economic losses for Sri Lanka, especially for the tourism sector and local businesses.
In world cricket, an India–Pakistan match carries enormous interest and economic value. From ticket sales and broadcast rights to sponsorships and advertising, it is one of the most lucrative fixtures of the tournament. Therefore, uncertainty surrounding the match has left not only fans but also broadcasters and commercial partners concerned.
No final decision has been made so far. However, if the match is confirmed at the last moment, ticket sales are expected to surge, with millions of cricket fans around the world eager to secure seats for the most talked-about match of the T20 World Cup.
