Adapting to Gen Z Cricketers, Salahuddin Also Regrets Nahid Ranas Absence

Having spent years working with cricketers at different levels, Mohammad Salahuddin has accumulated vast coaching experience. However, since taking charge as the head coach of Bangladesh’s High Performance (HP) unit, he believes his biggest challenge has been understanding the mindset of a new generation of players. According to him, keeping pace with today’s technology-driven youngsters is the key to bringing out the best in them.

Alongside his responsibilities with the national setup, Salahuddin is currently leading the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s High Performance programme. Speaking to reporters, he said, “এখন যেহেতু এইচপিএতে এসেছি, তারা আমার চেয়ে চার প্রজন্ম পেছনে। এখন আমাকে মানিয়ে নিতে হবে। কোচিংয়ের কিন্তু এটা একটা বড় দিক যে, কীভাবে মানিয়ে নিচ্ছি। কারণ, তারা এখন জেন-জি প্রজন্মের। তারা মোবাইলের যুগের। তাদের সঙ্গে মানিয়ে নিতে হবে। নাহলে তাদের সঙ্গে কোচিং করা আমার জন্য কঠিন হয়ে যাবে।”

Although he has previously worked closely with players from the national team, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), his current role at HP is significantly different. Most of the cricketers in the programme are still at the early stages of their careers, making it equally important to build a strong relationship with them. Speaking about that, he said, “তারা দেখলে হয়তো আমাকে একটু ভয় পেতে পারে। সালাউদ্দিন স্যার এসেছে। একটা দূরত্ব থাকবেই। তবে তাদের সঙ্গে মানিয় নিয়ে কীভাবে তাদের কাছ থেকে সেরাটা আদায় করতে পারি, সেটাই লক্ষ্য থাকতে হবে।”

Despite focusing more on the HP programme at present, Salahuddin remains connected with the national team. He is under contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board until the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and insists that coaching itself is what gives him the greatest satisfaction, regardless of the level of the players. Expressing that passion, he said, “দিনশেষে আমি যে চাকুরিটা করি, আমি তো কোচিং করাই। তো কোচ হিসেবে আমার আসলে আমি যদি কোচিং মাঠে থাকতে পারি, কোচিং করাতে পারি বাচ্চাদের, যার সঙ্গেই করি, আমি এটা সবসময় উপভোগ করি। আমার এতো ইগো নেই যে আমাকে সেরকম বড় খেলোয়াড় তৈরি করতে হবে। তবে একটা জিনিস আমার মনে রাখতে হবে যে, আমি যে প্রজন্মের, তার পরের দুই প্রজন্মের ক্রিকেটারদের সঙ্গে তাড়াতাড়ি মানিয়ে নিতে পারব।”

Salahuddin was appointed as Bangladesh’s senior assistant coach in November 2024. His initial contract ran until the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy before it was extended through to the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The experienced coach also shared his thoughts on Bangladesh’s upcoming two-match Test series against Australia. He admitted to feeling disappointed that fast bowler Nahid Rana has been ruled out with an injury, as he had been eager to see the youngster test Australia’s batters with his pace and bouncers. Reflecting on Rana’s absence, Salahuddin said, “সত্যি কথা বলতে নাহিদ রানাকে নিয়ে আমিও খুব রোমাঞ্চিত ছিলাম। কবে দেখব রানা অসিদের ব্যাটারদের আসলে বাউন্সার মারতেছে। খেলার অন্যরকম একটা রোমাঞ্চ থাকত। যেহেতু হয়নি, এখানে আফসোস করে লাভ নেই। তবে আমার মতে অন্য বোলার যারা আছে, তারাও যদি একটু বুদ্ধি করে বোলিং করতে পারে, আমার মতে তারাও অনেক ভালো করবে।”

Bangladesh will begin the Test series against Australia on August 13 in Darwin, with the second and final Test scheduled for August 22 in Mackay. While Australia currently sits at the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings, Bangladesh will also enter the series from a strong position.
