Michael Vaughan Suggests Ben Stokes Bat at No. 3
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed his desire to see Ben Stokes batting at number three in place of Ollie Pope following England's 1-2 series defeat against Pakistan.
Ollie Pope managed only 55 runs at an average of 11 across three matches while batting at number three against Pakistan. Vaughan believes that Pope lacks the necessary composure, suggesting that England should give Stokes a chance in that position. England's next assignment is a three-match series against New Zealand starting on November 27.
Vaughan stated, "Pope is a good player, but he doesn't have the mindset or strategy to improve against the best bowlers."
He further commented, "Playing spin at the highest level is difficult. I've said before that I believe Pope has a fragile mindset. When your mentality is fragile, you need a strategy to bounce back."
Regarding why Vaughan prefers Stokes to bat at three in Tests, he explained, "It might seem like a strange time to suggest this, given Stokes has had a poor tour as well. However, Stokes performs well against seamers and is clearly a player who can relieve pressure."
Looking ahead to next year, when Australia and India will play a five-match Test series against England, Vaughan remarked, "Next year, England will face India and Australia at home. That's ten Tests against the best bowlers. I think we need to discuss whether Pope can be successful in this situation."
