Bangladesh outclassed Australia in both batting and bowling departments to secure an 86-run victory via the DLS method in Mirpur. Although rain interrupted the match, the hosts sealed the win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern system.

In the opening match of the three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, Bangladesh posted 284 runs after batting first. Mosaddek Hossain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Tanzid Hasan Tamim all scored half-centuries to lay the foundation for the total.

Australia’s chase got off to a disastrous start. Matthew Short was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed off the very first ball of the innings. Soon after, Mustafizur Rahman trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw. The visitors lost four wickets for just 91 runs.

Nahid Rana removed Australian captain Josh Inglis, while Mosaddek Hossain clean-bowled Cooper Connolly. Alex Carey attempted to lead a recovery but was dismissed for 47 by Nahid. Australia continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, with Cameron Green fighting alone from one end.

Rain eventually halted play with Australia on 191 for 9 in 42.2 overs. Bangladesh were subsequently declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method.

Nahid Rana was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, claiming 4 wickets for 41 runs from his 10 overs. Mosaddek Hossain also impressed with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 37 runs in his allotted 10 overs.

Earlier, Bangladesh had posted 284 for 8 in their 50 overs after being sent in to bat, setting Australia a target of 285.

Winning the toss, Australian captain Josh Inglis elected to field first. Bangladesh came under pressure from the outset and lost their first wicket with just 10 runs on the board. Saif Hassan departed after scoring 5 runs from 5 balls.

Tanzid Tamim and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then rebuilt the innings. The pair added 96 runs for the second wicket, stabilizing the innings after the early setback.

Tanzid was dismissed for 54, while Shanto continued to anchor the innings before falling for 67. However, Bangladesh once again found themselves under pressure after losing wickets in quick succession during the middle overs, with the middle-order batters failing to make significant contributions.

At that stage, Towhid Hridoy and Mosaddek Hossain steadied the innings with a crucial 75-run partnership. Hridoy played a patient knock of 31 runs from 51 balls.

On a day when the middle order struggled, Mosaddek played a responsible and match-defining innings. He remained unbeaten on 86 from 70 balls, registering the highest ODI score of his career. Towards the end, Taskin Ahmed provided a valuable cameo, scoring 20 runs from just 16 deliveries.
