Taylors Century Powers Zimbabwe on Dominant Opening Day Against Afghanistan in Sharjah
Zimbabwe made a flying start to the first Test of their series against Afghanistan in Sharjah. Powered by a brilliant century from Brendan Taylor and a half-century from Brian Bennett, the visitors ended the opening day in a commanding position at 326 for 5.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Zimbabwe’s openers, Innocent Kaia and Ben Curran, provided a solid start with a 60-run partnership. Kaia, who enjoyed a slice of luck along the way, scored 34 off 51 balls before being caught behind off the bowling of Qais Ahmad. Curran followed soon after, bowled by a superb yorker from Mohammad Salim after scoring 42 off just 13 deliveries.
The next phase of the innings belonged entirely to Brendan Taylor and Brian Bennett. After Zimbabwe lost two wickets for 125 runs, the pair put together a massive 137-run partnership. Taylor brought up his first Test century since 2018, dominating the Afghan bowling attack. He reached 88 off 123 balls and took on Afghanistan’s spinners, particularly Zia-ur-Rehman. After smashing four sixes off Zia-ur-Rehman, Taylor moved from 95 to his century with a boundary off Salim.
The experienced batter eventually departed for a blistering 131 after being caught off the bowling of Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Following Taylor’s dismissal, Zimbabwe briefly came under pressure after losing a few quick wickets. From a comfortable 262 for 2, they suddenly slipped to 287 for 5. Zia-ur-Rehman struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Craig Ervine and debutant Antum Naqvi.
However, Brian Bennett and Wesley Madhevere ensured there were no further setbacks for the visitors before stumps. Batting in an aggressive, one-day style, Bennett remained unbeaten on 61 at the close of play, with Madhevere providing support at the other end.
For Afghanistan, Zia-ur-Rehman claimed two wickets.
