Shadman Ruled Out of First Innings Despite Ankle Injury Recovery Efforts
Bangladesh suffered a major setback on the second day of the first Test against West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium as opener Shadman Islam sustained an injury. After suffering a severe injury to his left ankle and leaving the field, the left-handed batter has been ruled out of Bangladesh’s first innings. His participation in the remainder of the match is also in serious doubt.
In a desperate situation, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was surprisingly promoted to open the batting in place of Shadman. However, the team management’s unexpected move failed to pay off as Nayeem was dismissed for just five runs off six balls, caught in the slips off Jayden Seales.
The incident occurred during the 78th over of West Indies’ first innings. While attempting to save a shot near the boundary at fine leg, Shadman dived and twisted his left ankle. He immediately collapsed to the ground in severe pain. As the initial treatment failed to provide relief, he was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher.
Speaking about Shadman’s injury in a video message released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after the second day’s play, team physiotherapist Bayezidul Islam said, “Shadman sustained pain in his left ankle. Subsequently, he was unable to continue fielding. We are monitoring him closely. We have also conducted a scan. It appears that he has sustained an injury.”
The physiotherapist further added, “We will receive the scan report tomorrow. After that, we will be able to provide further details. At this moment, he is not in a condition to bat in the first innings.”
Bangladesh were left in a difficult position at the end of the second day after losing Shadman, who had struck a brilliant century in the first innings of the previous Test in Mirpur. Under the rules, a replacement batter cannot be brought in unless it is a concussion-related substitution, meaning the Tigers will have to continue with just 10 players for the remainder of the match.
In reply to West Indies’ first-innings total of 356, Bangladesh finished the second day at 88 for 3, still trailing by 268 runs.
