BCB President Announces Farewell Ceremony for Mushfiqur Rahim
After announcing his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh’s most capped player in this format, received a heartfelt tribute during his match in the Dhaka Premier League. Following his retirement announcement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President confirmed that a special farewell ceremony will be held to honor the legendary cricketer.
Mushfiqur, at 37 years of age, played 274 ODIs for Bangladesh in a 19-year career, making him the second-highest run scorer for the country in the format, behind Tamim Iqbal. With a batting average of 36.42, Mushfiqur scored 9 centuries and 49 fifties, accumulating a total of 7,795 runs. He made his debut in 2006 and announced his retirement from ODIs on March 5, 2025, after a stellar career. Going forward, he will continue playing only Test cricket, having already bid farewell to T20I cricket in 2022.
BCB President Faruk Ahmed, speaking at the opening of the Dhaka Third Division Cricket League, shared the board's plans for a special tribute to Mushfiqur. He stated:
“This (Mushfiq’s farewell ceremony) is something we will plan. It’s a very natural event. Mushfiq is probably one of the legends of the country. In his 19-year journey, he has been one of the key figures who helped bring Bangladesh cricket to where it is today. He has been a guiding light for the team.”
He continued, “I can remember starting from the 2005 tour of England, then the 2007 World Cup, and up to now... the path he has shown will be of immense value for young cricketers. The cricket board is extremely grateful for all his achievements. We’ve acknowledged his accomplishments at the BCB, and we will plan on how best to honor him with a fitting tribute.”
This tribute will be a significant event for one of the most important figures in Bangladesh’s cricket history, whose contributions have helped shape the nation’s cricketing journey.
