Jos Buttler Steps Down as England Captain After Champions Trophy Exit
England's captain, Jos Buttler, has decided to step down following his team's disappointing performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. After a crushing defeat to Afghanistan, England's hopes of progressing in the tournament were dashed. Buttler, 34, made the announcement ahead of the team's final group match against South Africa in Karachi.
In a pre-match press conference on Friday, February 28, Buttler explained his decision, saying, "This is the right decision for me, and the right decision for the team. I hope that someone else will come in and work closely with Baz [Brendon McCullum] to take the team where it needs to go."
Buttler's decision comes after back-to-back losses to Australia and Afghanistan in Lahore, which saw England eliminated from the Champions Trophy. The former world champions also suffered a whitewash at the hands of India just a week before the mega tournament began. Buttler’s resignation marks the end of his tenure as England's white-ball captain.
