Bangladesh Lose Early Wickets but Recover Through Shanto and Mominul
Bangladesh began their first Test match of 2025 with a shaky start, losing both openers within the first hour of play. However, a resilient partnership between skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and the experienced Mominul Haque helped the hosts regain stability.
Winning the toss at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in the opening Test of the series, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opted to bat first. Zimbabwe, however, made early inroads with the ball, putting the Tigers under pressure in the morning session. By lunch, Bangladesh had reached 84 for 2 in 24 overs.
At the break, Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 21, while Shanto remained not out on 30.
Zimbabwe struck first in the ninth over when Victor Nyauchi was introduced into the attack. He removed opener Shadman Islam, who attempted a drive but was caught at gully for 12, ending a 31-run opening stand. Nyauchi then dismissed the other opener, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, in his following over. Joy, on 14, edged behind to wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo, leaving Bangladesh at 32 for 2.
Mominul Haque had a narrow escape early in his innings. A rising delivery from Blessing Muzarabani brushed his gloves, but wicketkeeper Mayavo failed to latch onto the difficult chance. The reprieve proved crucial, as Mominul went on to build a steady stand with his captain.
With the partnership settling in, Bangladesh looked to rebuild after the early losses and end the first session on a positive note.
