Injury blows hit Hyderabad, Coetzee offers new hope
Sunrisers Hyderabad are going through a difficult phase in the IPL, struggling with a series of injury setbacks. In an effort to regain momentum, the franchise has brought in South African young fast bowler Gerald Coetzee as a fresh boost to the squad.
Coetzee has been signed as a replacement for England’s left-arm pacer David Payne, who has been ruled out with an injury. The deal has been completed for INR 2 crore. Payne himself was not part of the original squad—he was drafted in after Australia’s Jack Edwards withdrew. However, after conceding 70 runs in 5 overs across two matches, Payne suffered an ankle injury and was forced to exit the tournament.
In such a situation, Coetzee’s arrival brings some relief to the team. He was in good form in the recent T20I series against New Zealand, notably picking up 3 wickets for 31 runs in one of the matches. He also has prior IPL experience, having played for Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans in previous seasons.
The injury list does not end there. England allrounder Brydon Carse has also been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hand injury. Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka has been brought in as his replacement.
Amid all the setbacks, there is some positive news for the franchise. Captain Pat Cummins is now ready to return after recovering from injury. Following scans in Sydney, he has been cleared to play, and could make his comeback on April 25 against Rajasthan Royals.
With two wins from five matches, Sunrisers Hyderabad currently sit fifth on the points table. They now face an important clash against Chennai Super Kings, hoping to turn things around.
