Tensions Rise Ahead of BCB Elections as Tamim’s Allegations Met with Counterclaims from Sports Advisor

The upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections have sparked intense controversy. On one side, former national team captain Tamim Iqbal has accused the government of interference, while Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has countered with allegations against Tamim’s supporters.

On Sunday (21 September), during a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka, Tamim claimed that the Cabinet Division, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Council were attempting to influence the elections by issuing letters. He said, “Various government bodies are directly interfering in the election.”

Responding to these allegations, the Sports Advisor told Jamuna Television, “If you call the government’s routine activities interference, you must first understand the extent of the government’s jurisdiction. If actions go beyond jurisdiction, then you may call it illegal interference. In that case, you can take legal measures, or even inform the ICC that its guidelines are being violated.”

He added, “I can speak to anyone under my jurisdiction, and so can my secretary. This is nothing more than routine government activity. You cannot call this interference.”

Instead, the Sports Advisor turned the tables, accusing Tamim’s camp of illegal actions, “In many places, political leaders have pressured deputy commissioners, which I would call unlawful interference. Big political leaders are phoning and instructing that specific councillors must be sent. That is politicization.”

He further alleged that Tamim’s name was being used as cover for coercive activities, “People on Tamim’s side are abducting club councillors to take control of voting rights. Bulbul bhai was even pressured over the phone to withdraw from the election with promises of being made CEO. What would you call that? That is terrorism, and it’s being done using Tamim Iqbal as a front. I don’t know if Tamim fully realizes the extent to which such violent acts are being carried out in his name.”

The Sports Advisor also questioned Tamim’s role in the election, “Tamim Iqbal is one of my favorite cricketers. If he had contested the election as a representative of cricket fans, I would have been delighted. Unfortunately, he is standing as a candidate backed by a political party.”
