The second day of the third Ashes Test against Australia ended on a challenging note for England. Australia posted 371 in their first innings, leaving England 158 runs behind at stumps with 8 wickets down, having reached 213. Jofra Archer’s five-wicket haul with the ball, however, has kept England in the contest.
The day began on the back of Alex Carey’s 106 and Usman Khawaja’s 82, but both were dismissed relatively quickly. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon then tried to add more runs for Australia. Starc, however, was bowled by Archer for 54.
For the last wicket, Lyon and Scott Boland added 23 crucial runs before Lyon was trapped lbw by Archer for just 9. Archer finished with impressive figures of 5 wickets for 53 runs, and Australia’s innings ended at 371 in 91.2 overs.
England then came out to bat and ended the day at 213 for 8 in 68 overs, still trailing by 158 runs in the first innings.
In the English top order, only Ben Duckett contributed significantly with 29 runs, while Joe Root was dismissed for 19. For the fifth wicket, Ben Stokes and Harry Brook stitched together a 56-run partnership before Brook fell for 45. Stokes then added 22 runs with Jamie Smith before Smith was dismissed.
Scott Boland struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Will Jacks and Brydon Carse, leaving England 8 down for 168. From there, Jofra Archer once again provided crucial support with the bat, putting together an unbeaten 45-run partnership with Stokes by the close of play. Archer remained not out on 30.
For Australia, Pat Cummins took 3 wickets, while Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland claimed 2 wickets each.
