After serving for four years, Wasim Khan is set to step down from his role as General Manager (Cricket) at the International Cricket Council (ICC). His tenure will conclude at the end of June this year, and he is expected to take up a new role from July.

Wasim assumed the position in May 2022, following Geoff Allardice’s move to the role of ICC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), which left the position vacant. Prior to joining the ICC, Wasim served as the Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for nearly three years.

He also had a notable playing career. Wasim was the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket, representing Warwickshire in the 1990s. A left-handed batter, he played 58 first-class matches and 30 List A matches for Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire. During Warwickshire’s title-winning season in 1995, he averaged nearly 50.

Wasim has also built a strong administrative career. He served as CEO of Leicestershire and, prior to that, worked at the Cricket Foundation, where he played a key role in transforming the “Chance to Shine” programme into a leading national cricket charity in the UK.

One of the major challenges during his tenure at the ICC was the increasingly congested cricket calendar. The rise of T20 and T10 leagues had begun to squeeze the window for international cricket. However, during his time, the 2023–2027 Future Tours Programme (FTP) saw an increase in the volume of international matches. The first-ever women’s FTP was also introduced during this period.

Wasim Khan’s departure comes amid a series of high-level changes within the ICC in recent years. Several senior officials have left the organisation over the past two years, including former CEO Geoff Allardice, Head of Events Chris Tetley, and Anti-Corruption Unit chief Alex Marshall. Sanjog Gupta is currently serving as the ICC CEO.
