Controversy Erupts Over Absence of DRS in Pakistan-Bangladesh Cricket Series

The ongoing cricket series between Pakistan and Bangladesh has sparked widespread discussion due to the absence of the Decision Review System (DRS). According to a recent report, Hawk-Eye Innovations, the company responsible for providing the DRS technology, has reportedly refused to travel to Pakistan, which is cited as the primary reason for the system's unavailability.

Allegations have emerged suggesting that Jay Shah — Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) — may have influenced the situation. Experts believe that under Shah’s leadership, BCCI’s influence in international cricket is growing, potentially affecting the decisions of other cricket boards.

Previously, in February 2024, Hawk-Eye faced controversy during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United. The technology malfunctioned during an LBW decision involving Rilee Rossouw, providing incorrect data — an error that the company later admitted. Since then, it is believed that Hawk-Eye has adopted a more cautious approach toward deploying its services in Pakistan.

The absence of DRS can compromise the neutrality and accuracy of match decisions, leading to dissatisfaction among players, teams, and fans. This situation calls for immediate action from the ICC and respective cricket boards to ensure the availability of technology and to make decisions free from political influence.

As of now, neither the ICC nor Hawk-Eye Innovations has issued any official statement regarding the matter.

The lack of DRS and Hawk-Eye’s decision not to operate in Pakistan raise serious concerns about the use of technology and impartiality in international cricket. Swift action from relevant authorities is necessary to resolve the issue and uphold the integrity of the sport.
