Shakib Al Hasan’s Political Involvement Called "Betrayal" by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary
Bangladeshi cricket star Shakib Al Hasan's recent comments defending his entry into politics have sparked sharp criticism from Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser. In a Facebook post published Wednesday night on his verified account, Alam labeled Shakib’s political decision as “betrayal.”
Below is a translated version of Shafiqul Alam’s full post:
"The controversy surrounding Shakib Al Hasan’s involvement in politics is not new. Like any citizen, he has the right to participate in political activities or choose a political career. But the question isn’t whether he joined politics—the real question is whom he chose to stand with.
When Shakib aligned himself with the Awami League, the party was under serious international scrutiny for alleged human rights violations. These allegations include genocide, enforced disappearances, unlawful arrests, false charges against opposition members, extrajudicial killings, rampant corruption, and even looting of state-owned banks. Joining such a party was not a typical political decision—it was a decision to stand by a regime being investigated by the United Nations for oppression against its own people.
It is rare to find an example of a globally renowned athlete voluntarily aligning with a government facing such extensive accusations of human rights abuses, especially in a democratic country. Shakib’s decision cannot be brushed off as a simple mistake—it either reveals a profound lack of political awareness, or worse, an opportunistic move for personal gain.
What’s more disappointing is the apparent absence of any professional PR or image management behind this move. Given Shakib’s stature and earnings, seeking expert advice from top PR agencies was well within his means.
But perhaps the most shocking and deplorable aspect is his silence. In Magura, his hometown, opposition supporters have reportedly faced violence and killings by ruling party backers. Yet Shakib has remained completely silent—no condemnation, no demand for justice, not even a hint of remorse. This silence is not just disappointing—it’s astonishing.
Shakib may be the most talented cricketer Bangladesh has ever produced, but talent does not exempt one from responsibility. His duty does not end with his performances for the national team. When an athlete supports a government accused of crimes against humanity by the UN, they inevitably become part of that dark chapter of history.
Additionally, his business ties, affiliations with controversial figures and organizations, and political steps all point toward personal gain.
One day, Shakib may have to return and face the consequences of his choices. And when that day comes, he may realize that his decision was not merely a political misstep—it was a betrayal."
The post has reignited debate over the role of public figures, especially sports icons, in political affairs—particularly when their actions are seen as aligning with controversial regimes.
